| 305 | From John Potter (CUNNELL one name study) He was not Sampson at all but as a young boy was known as TAMPION CUNNELL (on very close examination of the 1861 census sheet this is evident but is not so clear on the 1851) but I can see why it has been transcribed on both as Sampson!!! He has been transcribed as Thomas T. Dunnell in 1871 ? they finally got it right by 1881 & 1891 with Thomas T. CUNNELL!! By the time he married he had become known as Thomas Tampion CUNNELL (see his marriage record in the BMD index October to December 1870 ? Hoxne 4a 1202) ? he married an Ellen MOLE who was born in Southolt (Hoxne) and they initially lived in Athelington before moving to Southolt between 1872 and 1880 ? she was only 18 when they married and he was 28!! I have found four children for them: Betsy Sophia CUNNELL ? born between January to March 1872 (Athelington) Willie William J. CUNNELL ? born July 1880 (Southolt) Ernest Robert CUNNELL ? born between April to June 1885 (Southolt) Ivy Adelaide CUNNELL ? born between July to September 1889 (Southolt) Thomas Tampion had varying occupations ? Rat Catcher, Shopkeeper and Agricultural Labourer ? Ellen was also a shopkeeper when they married. He died aged 68 between January to March 1911 and it was registered in Hartismere District (GRO Ref 4a 586) ? he was still known as Thomas Tampion CUNNELL at this time. At least that clears up another one!!! By the way, his birth (abt 1842) does not appear to have been registered (I have found several CUNNELL?s in the Horham area at this time the same!!) ? there is a Thomas on Free BMD for 1842 in Taunton but this is actually a CUNNETT, and not a CUNNELL, on inspection of the records. | CUNNELL, Thomas Tampion (I48)

Rachel must have died between 1881 and the date of his wedding to his third wife Sarah Ann CUNNELL on 26-8-1883. Sarah Anne was his third wife. Presumably his marriage to Sarah Ann took place in a Registry Office because Sarah Ann had an illegitimate son, Joseph PYETT born 1849 Whites Directory shows Mrs Sarah Ann CUNNELL as a shopkeeper in 1885 Shopkeeper and Carrier (Whites-Horham1891,1892 & 1896) Chas Larter - Eight Bells PH and Carrier to Eye Daily (Kellys Horham 1900, 1904, 1908) | LARTER, Charles (I42)
